The SLIM method

The SLIM method is used for tailor-made guidance.

S - Strategic diagnostics:

If a child is registered at the Picasso school with a learning disadvantage, it is often not clear why this has happened. Therefore, before we start our specialized guidance, we will conduct pedagogical didactic research to find out what is the reason for the academic disadvantage.

  1. Cause of the arithmetic, reading, and spelling problems.
  2. Communication style/learning strategy for children from group 7.
  3. Research into the functioning of the eyes and ears (do the eyes and ears do what they are supposed to).
  4. Nutrition: A nutrition specialist will determine what the eating pattern of the child is and whether this eating pattern suits the child's needs. The question is therefore not whether the child eats healthy, but what the child needs. It is also possible that no dietary adjustments need to be made.
  5. Mindset: How does the child think about him-/herself? How does the child think about learning and making mistakes? Self-reflection.

L - Customized curriculum

Each child receives a learning plan in which the following matters are discussed:

  1. The goals for reading, math, and spelling and the content/teaching methods.
  2. The child's way of communicating and any learning strategy.
  3. Appointments for a functional optometric examination and an extensive hearing test (Johansen-IAS).
  4. A tailor-made nutrition plan if necessary.
  5. Mindset: What does the child need in order to develop the right learning behaviour i.e., attitude? Self-reflection, taking responsibility, preparing, indicating what he or she needs.

I - Individual education

The small scale of the school and the classes will be able to shape the individual character of each child. In addition, each student has a tailor-made program. Due to the small-scale nature, there are still the advantages of a small group.

Measuring progress

A measurement of the child’s progress takes place every 12 effective weeks. The measurements are carried out in the following ways:

  1. Every day, a short note indicates what has been done and how it has been carried out.
  2. Measurements made during the strategic diagnosis, possibly supplemented with test material based on the observations. This concerns reading, arithmetic, and/or spelling. The mindset is also examined again.
  3. A final measurement takes place after 36 weeks. This is provided for the student's future school. Very concrete advice is given. Based on this concrete advice, the school can determine where the child can best be placed and/or how care will be continued.

Teachers

The teachers are all experienced with at least 10 years of experience in primary education and a master’s degree in SEN (special educational needs) in reading, arithmetic, and/or spelling. These teachers have various tasks: teaching, diagnosing, discussing students, improving expertise, and providing feedback to colleagues.
